Overview

Titles: Philostrate, The Director, the Master of Revels

I have heard it over,

And it is nothing, nothing in the world,

Unless you can find sport in their intents,

Extremely stretched, & conned with cruel pain,

To do you service

Appearance

Although he can appear as anything, he has certain patterns he follows.

As Philostrate, he appears as a beautiful, cruel featured man with a mocking smile. He is charming, with a deep voice, black hair and green eyes, dressed in Ancient Greek garb. He almost mimics human in this form

The Director is a disembodied voice, calling orders that must at once be obeyed.

The Master of Revels is a sharp featured man in plain black clothing, who checks off every play, every story before it may be performed

It is not truly known if this is one Keeper or three, but at best guess it is one.

Personality

He lives for the theatre and the story. His Muses and Authors, such as Astraea, write the stories, describe the parts, hand out the tasks to the actors and order costumes from the Drudges. Then the actors must carry out the tale, which The Director changes if they are not cruel or exciting enough. Some Muses try to mitigate the terror he inflicts, some Authors to write happy endings, they always fail and are punished. The dragon eats the princess, the knight his brother, the children killed in the forest. And each time the actors rise again to prepare for another tale.

Abuses

The actors are broadly separated into kind - Fairest princes and princesses, Beasts for them to ride or do battle with, Ogre foes and Darkling evil to be defeated

The Wizened mostly acted to provide the props and costumes, while the Muses and Authors had to come up with ever more interesting tales for him to enjoy

Practices

The worst of times came when another of the Gentry would visit - an audience demanded the most terrible tales, the cruellest outcomes, the bloodiest battles.

Tactics

Philostrate chooses those with a talent for tales or acting, and otherwise those who physically fit his requirements. He will usually cajole his Muses as he forms them - a favourite tactic is telling them they were about to die and he saved them from this. Another method of keeping people with him is to tell them that if they leave, he will take their families instead

Few have escape Philostrate, those that do usually working in conjunction with others. If any attempt and are brought back, they are most likely to become the props and costumes in the next show rather than the actorss

Changelings

Environment

Sometimes it is a giant stage, at other times a Marquee. But if the tale is truly epic the landscape will change as needed, the actors battling through swamps or climbing mountains to reach distant castles.

Between plays most are kept in Green Rooms and dressing rooms, but the Muses stay with him constantly and the Wizened have workshops.

Gentry

Rarely was he openly in conflict with any others, and instead not infrequently did he have visitors to watch his plays - Gentry and Changelings among them. He also took the Troupe of players with him to visit others and entertain them when asked to do so

Quotes

  • "All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts,

His acts being seven ages. "
