Marquis of the Masks
From IoD Lost
Contents |
Appearance
The Marquis is a tall and imposing figure, he dresses in a regal outfit trimmed in exotic furs and dripping with gold chains and gems, delicate gloves cover his almost clawed hands. A wide leather belt sits at his waist and from it hang a series of porcelain masks, each perfectly crafted and painstakingly painted, that clink quietly as he walks but never seem to chip or break. His face is completely blank, not in that it is expressionless but that it is simply not there at all, a smooth nothingness waiting to take on a mask and a role.
Personality
The Marquis is a collector of stories, as well as a superb actor in his own right. Fascinated by the heroic tales humans tell he revels in finding new stories to see played out, but he doesn't stop at being a casual viewer, instead he often dons a mask and enters the story as one of the characters. As such his personality often depends on what role he is playing, as he so often is even when not in one of his stories. He embodies the mercurial nature of Faerie, often seeming to be a blank slate when not in one of his roles.
But of cause this isn't precisely true, those who spend more time in his presence, or track his exploits, soon find he has a voracious hunger for new tales, a driving obsession that defines him. He acts as a patient spider in a web, tracking down his next actors and laying traps for them to fall into.
Domain
His Domain is as shifting as his own face, reflecting the thousands of stories he has captured over the years that play over and over again in their own gardens within his realm. He stays in a castle in the centre, a short walk to any of his amusements and filled with books from around the world. In the castle, which itself changes daily in most respects, lays a single room that is always the same; a room filled with thousands upon thousands of masks, many an escaped changeling would like nothing more than to see this room smashed to small pieces.
Durance
Pick your favourite adventure story. Odds are good some poor changelings are playing it out right now for the Marquis entertainment. Often he makes Fairest to star in these little stories but he's found room for the occasional Beast or wily Darkling as years go by, even the Elementals and Ogres sometimes find themselves in the stories for one reason or another. Wizened are more likely to be busy tending the castle's library or perhaps even making and polishing masks. How each changeling comes to be as they are is different but many escape with horror stories about the room of masks.
